News

We want to thank all those who supported The Kirby Band, both physically and financially, throughout the year 2020.  We began our year returning to rehearsals at the end of January 2020.  However, in mid to near the end of March, it was decided we should close down rehearsals due to the Covid-19 issue.   As time went on, it was evident that we would not be able to have indoor rehearsals and keep social distancing recommendations.  All activities including parades and concerts were cancelled through May to early July. However, near the end of June, it was determined the band could rehearse outside our facility on our newly created parking lot and keep the social distancing requirements.  At that point, it was decided we could present our summer concert series at Kirby Park in Nichols, NY in August. After five weeks of outside rehearsal, concerts were presented on the first three Mondays of August.  However, the concert format was modified this year to assure social distancing and minimal personal contact.  Concerts were of one hour duration with no intermission or refreshment availability. The audience was encouraged to practice social distancing and could do so in the park setting. The concerts were very successful and well received. The Kirby Band was one of very few concert bands throughout the nation who performed concerts in 2020. As a side note, The Kirby Band is believed to be the oldest continuously performing band in the United States, having performed annualy since 1876. The final concert of the August concert series was presented by our affiliate band, Ain't Misbehavin', a smaller unit that could rehearse and keep social distancing within the rehearsal facility.

The Kirby Band completed the 2020 season with a final concert on August 19th, at Howard Elmer Park in Sayre, PA where we were able to set up in the street facing the park to provide the necessary social distancing. That concluded our activity for the year 2020 with only 4 performances. All other activities including rehearsals were cancelled for the remainder of 2020. No Christmas concerts are scheduled for 2020.  Rehearsals will resume in early 2021.

Ain't Misbehavin', a dance band with jazz ensemble instrumentation, and affiliated with the Kirby Band, performed 6 programs in 2020.  Visit their page on the Kirbyband.com website for information and schedule or at https://aintmisbehav.wordpress.com/

Renovations & Update Projects This Past Year - 2020
With a generous anonymous donation, the soffit area from the side of the building out to the eaves has been repaired to eliminate birds and other criters from getting into the attic of the building from the outside.  Also, a anonymous donor provided funds to replace the back door of the building with a new steel door and the building of a new porch and steps to provide emergency exiting from the building as well as replacing the double main entry doors with steel doors.

Seth Edsell, a member of the Kirby Band, along with his wife, has spent hours working on the foundation of the building, first filling in the holes where loose stones had fallen out, and critters were getting in. This spring he finished the project by adding mortar and finally sealing the entire foundation.  He's a great example of hard work and service to the band.

Previous Renovations
With a generous anonymous donation, the band was able to design and construct a parking and vehicle storage area in front of, and along side, the Kirby Band Building.  This will facilitate easier access during the winter months and rainy weather conditions.  We also purchased a trailer to transport music stands. chairs, and other equipment to concert sites.

With generous financial grants from the Mildred Faulkner Truman Foundation, of Owego, NY and additional funds from  anonymous donors, the Kirby Band building has had major renovations.  The interior walls were sheetrocked and painted.  The walls have been insulated with blown-in insulation.  The floor has been sanded, smoothed and refinished with several coats of sealer.  Foam insulation has been sprayed underneath the floor to keep the cold air from coming in through the seams.  The foam has also stabilized the floor, making it more solid.  The attic area has been completely insulated. Members of the band volunteered their time and worked many hours refinishing the floors and placing the insulation in the attic.  We are very grateful to our many supporters. With a generous anonymous donation, the band wagon was completely refurbished with, a new floor that will sustain the elements of weather, sand blasting and repainting the entire wagon, new undercoating, along with some mechanical updates.  In October 2017, through a generous donation from an anonymous donor, the Kirby Band Building now has a ramp, making the building accessable to all.  Go here to see photos of the ramp and refurbished band wagon. Prior renovations over the past years have included replacing the roof with new steel roofing, refurbishing and painting the exterior of the building, installing new electrical service to the building, updating the interior wiring, and installing electric heat.
